Bethesda MD (SPX) Nov 21, 2006 Iridium Satellite announces the appointment of Lieutenant General John Campbell, U.S. Air Force (Retired), as the company's Executive Vice President for Government Affairs. Gen. Campbell fills a new and important role as this global mobile satellite services provider accelerates its provision of products and services to the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD), the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and nearly 40 other government departments, bureaus and agencies. "We are pleased to have Gen. Campbell leading our government affairs at such an important juncture in Iridium history," said Matt Desch, Chairman and CEO, Iridium Satellite. "U.S. Government customers are utilizing our network and services more than ever for new and profound mobile satellite communications applications. The role of Iridium is spreading in both traditional communications systems and in multiple cutting-edge applications such as netted communications, asset tracking, remote monitoring and telemetry reporting. Having been an Iridium customer, Gen. Campbell can help us anticipate the government's future needs, as well as today's role for the only truly global satellite communications network that reaches all corners of the earth." Coinciding with the timing of Gen. Campbell's appointment, Iridium also is at an important stage in developing plans for its next generation system, with which the company hopes to serve the U.S. government and broad commercial customer base for decades to come. Earlier this year, Iridium announced it is designing a next generation, IP-based, end-to-end network to provide service until at least 2030. The new network will maintain the security and global coverage that customers count on, while increasing available bandwidth, supporting multiple communications devices and driving down costs. Through it, Iridium plans to provide new offerings such as portable and fixed broadband communications, and wide area broadcast services. At the same time, Iridium is investing in its current constellation to develop capabilities in ways never thought possible. Gen. Campbell joins Iridium from Applied Research Associates (ARA) of Alexandria, Va., where he served as Principal, Defense and Intelligence, since 2004. Gen. Campbell joined ARA after retiring from the USAF after a 32-year career. In the USAF, Gen. Campbell served in a variety of operational and staff assignments around the world. In his last assignment, he served as the Associate Director of Central Intelligence for Military Support for the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). In this position, he was the senior military representative at the CIA, serving as the military advisor to the Director of Central Intelligence and as liaison between the CIA, the DoD and the Regional Combatant Commanders. Prior to his assignment at the CIA, Gen. Campbell served from 1998 to 2000 as the Vice Director of the Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA) and as the first commander of the Joint Task Force -- Computer Network Defense. From 1997 to 1998, he served on the Joint Staff as Deputy Director for Operations. Between 1971 and 1997, Gen. Campbell served around the world in a variety of operational assignments as an F-15 and F-16 fighter pilot and commander. In his last operational assignment he commanded the USAF's largest F-15 wing at Tyndall AFB, Fla. Gen. Campbell is a graduate of the Air War College, Capstone Gen. and Flag Officer Course, Joint Force Air Component Commander Course, Senior Information Warfare Applications Course, and Joint Flag Officer Warfighting Course. He is the recipient of numerous military and intelligence community awards, including the Defense Distinguished Service Medal, the Legion of Merit, the Air Medal, the CIA Distinguished Intelligence Medal, the CIA Donovan Award, the National Imagery and Mapping Agency Award, the National Reconnaissance Distinguished Medal, and the National Security Agency Award. He is a graduate of the University of Kentucky with a degree in Computer Science and a Masters of Business Administration. Related Links Iridium Satellite Space Industry Appointments
