Spirit Right-Front And Right-Rear Wheels Remain Stalled
Pasadena CA (JPL) Dec 25, 2009
Spirit's drive on Sol 2120 (Dec. 19, 2009) included commands for using all six wheels. However, the right-front wheel rotated less than 2 degrees and the right-rear wheel did not rotate at all. The other four wheels completed enough rotations to drive about 10 meters (33 feet), but produced no measurable forward motion by the rover. The rover team plans to command further driving this week while continuing to assess the possibility of getting more motion from the right-front wheel. ... read more

Kansas Scientists Probe Mysterious Possible Comet Strikes On Earth
Lawrence KS (SPX) Dec 22, 2009
It's the stuff of a Hollywood disaster epic: A comet plunges from outer space into the Earth's atmosphere, splitting the sky with a devastating shock wave that flattens forests and shakes the countryside. But this isn't a disaster movie plotline. "Comet impacts might be much more frequent than we expect," said Adrian Melott, professor of physics and astronomy at the University of Kansas. ... more

Avatar Moon Pandora Could Be Real
Boston MA (SPX) Dec 22, 2009
In the new blockbuster Avatar, humans visit the habitable - and inhabited - alien moon called Pandora. Life-bearing moons like Pandora or the Star Wars forest moon of Endor are a staple of science fiction. With NASA's Kepler mission showing the potential to detect Earth-sized objects, habitable moons may soon become science fact. If we find them nearby, a new paper by Smithsonian ... more

Silicon Technology Offers Extended X-Ray Vision Of High-Energy Cosmos
Paris, France (ESA) Dec 23, 2009
As elements of the integrated circuits running our computers, phones and electronics, silicon wafers are everywhere. An ESA-led effort is establishing an out-of-this-world use for these commonplace items: when stacked together precisely by the thousand they promise to deliver astronomy's clearest X-ray view yet of the most violent regions of space. "ESA has been working with specialist ... more

Space Debris A Concern In Satellite Launch
Zirakpur, India (SPX) Dec 23, 2009
Only 20% of the 12,000-odd artificial objects, including satellites, are operational in space, but unwanted "debris" are causing a lot of problem in launching new ones, former ISRO director Suresh Naik said. There are around 12,000 satellites and other artificial objects in the space, out of which only 20% are active. Satellites have a life of 15-20 years, and then they get lost in space ... more
