Astrium Delivers Nimiq 4 Into Orbit
Toulouse, France (SPX) Oct 09, 2008
Telesat's Nimiq 4 satellite has successfully completed in-orbit tests and has been placed at the 82 degreesW orbital slot. The satellite was formally handed over to Telesat Canada by satellite manufacturer Astrium as part of the in-orbit delivery contract. The Astrium team in Toulouse took control and began operating the Nimiq 4 satellite following its launch on 20 September 2008 from the ... read more

New, smaller satellites are developed
Ann Arbor, Mich. (UPI) Oct 8, 2008
U.S. scientists say they are developing a satellite about the size of a loaf of bread that will be deployed to study space weather. The National Science Foundation-funded project called Radio Explorer, or RAX, is being led by the University of Michigan and the SRI International Corp., a California independent research and technology development organization. The satellite, called ... more

Mercury As Never Seen Before
Huntsville AL (SPX) Oct 09, 2008
Yesterday, NASA's MESSENGER spacecraft flew past Mercury and photographed a broad swath of never-before-seen terrain. The first of more than 1,200 high-resolution images are arriving back at Earth now. "The MESSENGER team is extremely pleased by the superb performance of the spacecraft and the payload," says MESSENGER Principal Investigator Sean Solomon of the Carnegie Institution of ... more

The model of the James Webb Space Telescope has been making a lot of "orbits" around the world, and is now slated to "land" at the Deutsches Museum in Munich, Germany from October 13-28, 2008. The actual James Webb Space Telescope is in the process of being built. Once it launches in 2013 it will find the first galaxies and will peer through dusty clouds to see stars forming planetary ... more

Fuzziness On The Road To Physics' Grand Unification Theory
Eugene OR (SPX) Oct 08, 2008
Leave it to hypothesized gravity to weigh down what physicists have thought for 30 years. If theoretical physicists, led by the University of Oregon's Stephen Hsu, are right, the idea that nature's forces merge under grand unification has grown fuzzy. At issue are grand unified theories that first appeared in the 1970s. They have suggested that, at short distances or high-energy scales ... more

Cosmic Eye Sheds Light On Early Galaxy Formation
Durham, UK (SPX) Oct 09, 2008
A Cosmic Eye has given scientists a unique insight into galaxy formation in the very early Universe. Using gravity from a foreground galaxy as a zoom lens the team was able to see a young star-forming galaxy in the distant Universe as it appeared only two billion years after the Big Bang. Scientists at Durham University (including Royal Astronomical Society Norman Lockyer Fellow ... more

Apollo Heat Shield Uncrated After 35 Years, Helps New Crew Vehicle Design
Greenbelt MD (SPX) Oct 09, 2008
NASA scientists developing the next generation of exploration vehicles and heat shields for NASA's Orion Crew Exploration Vehicle experienced "Christmas in July" when they uncrated the heat shields used on the Apollo missions some 35 years ago. These shields now are being analyzed to help with the development and engineering process. Teams of NASA scientists and engineers working on the ... more
