Telenor's broadband services are designed to meet the communications requirements of a wide variety of end users - from international corporations and governments to small and medium enterprises and small office, home office customers.

"Over the past year, Telenor Satellite Services has made substantial modifications in its global network and infrastructure in Europe and the United States," said Tore Hilde, chief executive officer of Telenor Satellite Services.

"With these modifications, Telenor now offers a comprehensive portfolio of new services and new technologies, significantly expanding broadband communications services via satellite into more regions of the globe, including Europe, Africa, the Middle East and the Americas."

Incorporating a variety of global satellite communications technologies, satellite systems, and commercially available equipment, Telenor now delivers a wide range of broadband solutions that operate using fixed installation and transportable very small aperture terminal (VSAT) equipment.

Telenor offers services that provide Demand Assigned Multiple Access (DAMA) or Single Carrier Per Channel (SPCP) technologies with typical throughput in excess of 2 Mbps.

Telenor broadband services use a variety of global and regional satellite systems including Intelsat, New Skies, Eutelsat, Spacecom and Telenor's Thor satellites, all carried over Telenor Satellite Services' own worldwide teleport network.

When commercially available, Telenor will add Broadband Global Area Network (BGAN) service via the Inmarsat I-4 satellite system to its portfolio of broadband solutions, enabling mobile broadband connectivity for users on land.

Telenor's broadband services offer typical throughput ranging from 128 kbps to 2 Mbps and beyond. Telenor has developed two portfolios, one for on land and one for at sea.

Telenor's new broadband portfolio of on land services features a comprehensive selection of Custom Network, Dedicated Link, and Shared Access solutions that provide "always on" Internet access and IP-based communications with a range of applications and features to meet the requirements of government and corporate customers to small office and home office users.

Similarly, Telenor's at sea broadband portfolio features new customized, dedicated and shared access solutions for vessels ranging from large ocean-going ships to yachts, fishing boats and recreational vessels.

Otrum And Telenor Sign Contract For Satellite Broadband
Fornebu, Norway (SPX) Mar 21, 2005 Otrum, a provider of interactive TV solutions to hotels, and Telenor Satellite Broadcasting have signed a contract for the use of two-way satellite broadband.

Otrum will use the DVB-RCS service mainly to deliver films to hotels, but also to establish two-way communication with their installed systems within hotels.

With Telenor's DVB-RCS service, Otrum will have the possibility to deliver film content to its hotel customers via satellite, resulting in a cost-effective and reliable solution.

"Whilst looking for an additional method for delivering film content to our customers, it was clear that satellite distribution would offer benefits in several areas," says Mr. Fredd Causevic, President & CEO of Otrum.

"Logistically, delivering film content from a central source is very practical saving both time and money. At the same time this will improve our service to hotels, with overnight film updates and more flexibility in the film selection.

"Via two-way communications we can also monitor and update the software installed at individual hotels, giving these online hotels improved reliability and remote service".

The satellite broadband market is growing and the introduction of new and improved technology will accelerate this development. The DVB-RCS product enables Telenor to meet the market demand for more low cost broadband satellite services.

"Otrum's requirement for two-way satellite communication was a bit unusual for satellite broadband, but using this flexible technology allowed us to match the requirement," says Cato Halsaa, Managing Director of Telenor Satellite Broadcasting.

"Otrum needed a cost effective solution to distribute large content files to many users spread all over Europe. Covering multiple sites over large geographical areas is what satellite does best and with our new DVB-RCS service we have the technology available to reach into more market segments than TV and radio broadcasting".
