NASA has awarded a consolidated Extravehicular Activity (EVA) Systems Contract to Hamilton Sundstrand Space Systems International of Windsor Locks, Conn. The spacewalk support contract, with a base period of five years and five additional one-year options, has a potential value of $814 million. Work includes defining and integrating EVA requirements for Space Shuttle flights and International Space Station expeditions; sustaining engineering for EVA hardware systems including provisioning of Extravehicular Mobility Unit (EMU) spacesuits, tools and crew aids, problem analysis and resolution, and real-time mission support; extending certified spacesuit life support system component life through the life of the Shuttle and Station. It also includes flight processing and outfitting of EVA flight hardware systems; processing and outfitting of EVA training hardware systems; and advanced spacesuit hardware systems technology development. The cost-plus-award-fee contract will support the EVA Office at NASA's Johnson Space Center (JSC), Houston. Work will be performed at JSC, and at the worksites of Hamilton Sundstrand and its major subcontractors, United Space Alliance and Oceaneering Space Systems, both of Houston, and ILC Dover, Frederica, Del. The contract replaces all work associated with the existing EMU contract and incorporates elements related to EMUs in the Space Flight Operations Contract and the Science, Engineering, Analysis and Test contract into a single contract. Integration of these contracts and activities is designed to consolidate work, increase efficiency and provide effective end-to-end management of all activities and equipment associated with spacewalks.
