Far-left Spanish ministers quit 'propaganda machine' X Madrid, Jan 21 (AFP) Jan 21, 2025 Three members of Spain's leftist government including a deputy prime minister quit X on Tuesday, calling the social platform of Donald Trump's ally Elon Musk a right-wing "propaganda machine". Far-left Labour Minister Yolanda Diaz, a deputy premier in the Socialist-led government, said X had become "a propaganda machine" promoting some ideas over others through algorithms. "There is no space for debate on X but, fortunately, there are alternatives," Diaz added, saying citizens had more power than what "Musk and the lords of digital feudalism want to have us believe". Diaz's far-left allies Ernest Urtasun and Sira Rego, respectively ministers for culture and children, also announced they were leaving the platform. The former Twitter "has become the loudspeaker of a far-right oligarchy and its tentacles that promote hate and disinformation", Urtasun wrote on X. Other social networks "work better" by fighting against hate speech, protecting user data and caring for "minimum democratic standards", Diaz's Sumar party said in a statement. The flight of users comes as Musk, who promoted Trump's White House bid on X, takes on an influential role in the new US administration to advise on public spending cuts. imm/ds/js |
