Typhoon offered as F-16 replacement for Belgium
by Richard Tomkins
Washington (UPI) Sep 11, 2017

Britain is offering the Eurofighter Typhoon aircraft to Belgium as a possible replacement for the F-16s now flown by the Belgian Air Force.

The offer -- made on behalf of itself and the governments of Germany, Italy and Spain -- was tendered in response to a replacement request from Brussels.

"I commend Belgium for what is a comprehensive and well-executed competitive process," said Britain's Minister for Defense Procurement Harriet Baldwin. "The UK, supported by Spain, Italy and Germany, has offered Belgium a government to government strategic partnership, including a long-term relationship with the Royal Air Force.

The Eurofighter Typhoon is a twin-engine multi-role fighter made by a consortium comprised of BAE Systems, Leonardo (formerly Alenia Aermacchi) and Airbus. The NATO Eurofighter and Tornado Management Agency manages the Typhoon program and is the prime customer or the aircraft.

It has a maximum speed of 1,550 mph and a service ceiling of 65,000 feet.

Belgium last March issued a Request for Proposal for aircraft to replace its aging F-16 fleet beginning in 2023.
