Leonardo-Finmeccanica develops new E-scan radar by Richard Tomkins Rome (UPI) May 4, 2016
An electronic scanning radar with a flat-panel antenna design is being built for Norwegian search-and-rescue helicopters by Leonardo-Finmeccanica. The system, called Osprey, has no moving parts. "Osprey's flat panel design opens up the potential for installation on a long list of aircraft previously deemed unable to carry such a class of radar, including unmanned aerial vehicles," the company said. "In its configuration for NAWSARH, the Norway All Weather Search And Rescue Helicopter program, Osprey comprises three flat panels, one on the front of the helicopter and two at the rear, facing out at angles to create the 360-degree field of regard. "Space requirements are minimal and the helicopter's belly is left clear, maximizing ground clearance for challenging rescue landings on rough terrain." The radar will be fitted onto 16 AW109 helicopters ordered by Norway. AgustaWestland, maker of the aircraft, is a Finmeccanica company. Osprey was developed at the company's facility in Scotland with company funds and provides 360-degree radar coverage. It will be sold alongside the company's successful Seaspray family of E-Scan radars, which are in active service with the Royal Navy and with a number of export customers, including the U.S. Coast Guard.
