Iran warship tests home-built torpedo: report

Turkey says Syria, Qatar back Iran plan
Istanbul (AFP) May 9, 2010 - Syria and Qatar back Turkish efforts for a diplomatic solution to the row over Iran's nuclear programme, Turkey's foreign minister said after leaders of the three countries met Sunday, a report said. Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and Qatar's ruler, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani, held three-way talks in Istanbul to discuss regional affairs. Ahmet Davutoglu said the Syrian and Qatari leaders both supported Ankara's efforts to mediate between Western powers and Iran, among them a proposal to host talks over Tehran's nuclear activities, Anatolia news agency reported.

"The three countries condemned recent rhetoric and actions raising tensions in the region... They emphasized support for all efforts aimed at regional peace and stability," the minister was quoted as saying. Iranian parliament speaker Ali Larijani was also in Turkey Sunday, holding talks with President Abdullah Gul in Istanbul at the start of a three-day visit, but no statement was made after the meeting, Anatolia reported. Turkey and Brazil, both non-permanent members of the UN Security Council, are opposed to fresh sanctions against Iran, sought by the United States, and have recently stepped up diplomatic efforts to resolve the standoff.

Davutoglu said Friday he had proposed to host talks between top Iranian nuclear negotiator Saeed Jalili and EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton, as a representative of world powers in the so-called P5+1 group, to break the standoff over Iran's nuclear programme. Iran has welcomed the idea and a reply is awaited from Ashton, he said. On Monday, Larijani was expected to attend a meeting of parliament speakers and lawmakers from 28 Muslim countries in Istanbul to discuss Israeli plans to expand Jewish settlements in East Jerusalem, which have infuriated the Muslim world.

The secretary-general of the Organisation of the Islamic Conference, Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu, and Erdogan were also expected to attend the talks. The Turkish, Syrian and Qatari leaders discussed also the Israeli settlement plans in their talks on Sunday, branding them "unacceptable" and stressing that "Israel must abandon these policies," Davutoglu said. They also urged "an end to actions that will harm efforts to preserve the historical and religious identity of East Jerusalem," he said. Assad was in Turkey for a two-day visit, scheduled to end later Sunday, while the Qatari emir arrived earlier in the day and left after the meeting.

Iranian warship the Jamaran on Sunday test-fired a home-built torpedo for the first time as part of ongoing naval war games in the Gulf, state television's website reported.

"This torpedo is anti-submarine and when it is fired from the warship, it automatically hunts for the submarine and destroys it," navy commander Arya Hassani was quoted as saying.

Iran positive on fresh nuclear talks with West: media
Ankara (AFP) May 8, 2010 - Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki has welcomed a proposal for new talks with Western powers over his country's nuclear programme, possibly in Turkey, media reported late Friday.

"This idea has been accepted by Iran. If we agree on a date, this meeting may be held in a short time," Anatolia news agency quoted Mottaki as saying after talks with the Turkish foreign minister in Istanbul Friday evening.

"The venue of the meeting will be very probably Turkey. This proposal is a good proposal for us," he said.

Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said he had proposed the meeting in Turkey during his visit to Tehran last month.

He had suggested talks between Iran's top nuclear negotiator Saeed Jalili and EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton, as a representative of powers in the so-called P5+1 group working on the Iran nuclear standoff.

"We have offered a meeting with P5+1 in Turkey. Iran is positive on this proposal. A reply is being awaited from Ashton," he said.

"The resumption of talks between the P5+1 and Iran is a must. The way for diplomatic efforts should be opened," he said.

The P5+1 group consists of permanent UN Security Council members Britain, China, France, Russia and the United States, plus Germany.

Turkey and Brazil, both non-permanent members of the Security Council opposed to fresh sanctions against Iran, have recently stepped up efforts for a diplomatic solution of tensions over the Islamic republic's nuclear activities.

World powers and Iran have been at loggerheads for months over a proposed deal to supply nuclear fuel for a Tehran research reactor in exchange for low-enriched uranium from Iran.

The deal stalled after Iran insisted the two materials be exchanged simultaneously within its borders. That was rejected by the world powers, who accuse Iran of masking a weapons drive under the guise of what Tehran says is a purely civilian atomic programme.

The United States has been spearheading a drive for a fourth round of UN Security Council sanctions against Iran.

The report said the torpedo was fired from the Iran-built Jamaran, which was deployed earlier this year. It has a displacement of around 1,400 tonnes and is equipped for electronic warfare.

On Wednesday the Islamic republic's navy began eight days of manoeuvres in the Gulf, Sea of Oman and the northern Indian Ocean covering an area of 250,000 square kilometres (around 97,000 square miles).

The drill comes weeks after a similar exercise by the elite Revolutionary Guards Corps in the Gulf and in the key oil route of Strait of Hormuz.

Iran's armed forces regularly conduct such drills, often test-firing what they say are home-built missiles.

Surprise dinner fails to break Iran nuclear deadlock
Washington (AFP) May 7, 2010
A surprise, high-profile UN dinner failed to break the deadlock with Iran over its nuclear plans as the United States called it a "missed opportunity" and kept up the pressure Friday for UN sanctions. The Obama administration also claimed that Iran's dinner invitation to all 15 UN Security Council members on Thursday is another sign that Tehran is worried about its international isolation an ... read more
