Israel Aerospace Industries has introduced a new system for military aircraft to help pilots avoid midair collisions with civilian and commercial planes. The Collision Warning System is designed to warn combat pilots of potential impacts before they occur. The product was developed by IAI's MALAM division, and will debut at the I/ITSEC exhibition taking place in Orlando, Fla., from Nov. 28 to Dec. 2. IAI officials contend growing congestion in civil air space is a problem for combat pilots, and a preventative system is needed to avoid unneeded casualties. The CWS operates using range-independent air-combat maneuvering instrumentation with the capabilities of monitoring non-military platforms. Warnings are received by the military pilot only. No indications are given to civilian aircraft. "The growing congestion of the airspace and lack of integration between military and civil air spaces requires new, independent solutions to prevent collisions," IAI's MALAM division general manager Jacob Galifat said in a press release. "Such systems will improve flight safety without compromising operational freedom." The CWS is designed to integrate with existing platforms. To provide warnings of imminent collisions, the system plots and projects flight paths for all aircraft in a pilot's vicinity. The system is compatible with 4th and 5th generation fighter jets, remotely piloted aircraft, helicopters and training aircraft. "The CWS we are introducing today combines the independence, operational freedom, ease of integration and affordability which are so important for the military operator, enabling military pilots to fly safely without risk to civilian or military aircraft nearby, in both training and operational flights," Galifat added.
