Boeing Sets Up UK Defense Subsidiary
St Louis MO (SPX) Dec 21, 2007 Boeing has appointed Mike Kurth as managing director of Boeing Defence UK, Ltd., to establish and initially lead the newly structured business, effective Jan. 1, 2008. Kurth will be responsible for coordinating all of Boeing's defense activities and business development in the UK, working with Sir Roger Bone, president, Boeing UK, to pursue growth opportunities and partnerships. Supporting Kurth are Maj. Gen. (Ret.) Jonathan Bailey and Brian Moran, who also have joined the senior management of Boeing Defence UK, which currently has around 150 employees at 20 locations throughout the UK. Jim Albaugh, Boeing Integrated Defense Systems president and CEO, said, "This appointment demonstrates our commitment to our customers and partners in the UK. Mike Kurth possesses the outstanding domain knowledge, customer relationships and leadership qualities to position and strengthen Boeing Defence UK, Ltd., as a key on-shore partner to the Ministry of Defence." Boeing has been active over the last year launching three new systems engineering and technology facilities in Bristol, Farnborough and Cranfield. In the Network Enabled Capability arena, Boeing, in partnership with Thales UK, has been selected as the preferred bidder for the role of System-of-Systems Integrator for the Future Rapid Effect System program. Boeing also has been recruiting systems engineers, software analysts, training specialists, as well as supply chain and process managers. Kurth, a pilot with more than 5,000 hours on 30 aircraft types, joined Boeing in 1997 after 24 years of distinguished service with the U.S. Marine Corps. Prior to this appointment, he was vice president, Business Development, IDS Advanced Systems. Holding a bachelor's degree from the University of Wisconsin, Madison and a master's degree from the Naval War College, he is a board member of the Association of the U.S. Army and the Marines' Memorial Association. Kurth is a recipient of the Navy Cross, and his other military honors and citations include the Alfred A. Cunningham Marine Aviator of the Year Award and the Navy League's John A. Lejeune Award for Inspirational Leadership. Bailey, currently deputy director, Boeing Defense UK, Bristol, retired from the British Army in 2005 after 33 years of service. From 2002-05, he was director general, Development and Doctrine, responsible for the future concepts, force development and doctrine of the British Army. Prior to that time, he was director of the Royal Artillery. Brian Moran, director for UK Industrial Participation, was formerly chief of staff to the President and CEO of Boeing Integrated Defense Systems. He is responsible for leading the development and management of Boeing's offset programs and industrial liaison in the UK.
earlier related report Steve Oswald, a retired U.S. Naval Reserve rear admiral and former astronaut, was named vice president and general manager of the new I and SS division, reporting to Roger Krone, president of the Network and Space Systems business of Boeing Integrated Defense Systems. Oswald brings to the assignment extensive experience in national security and the command, control, communications, computers, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (C4ISR) field. I and SS will be based in the Washington, D.C. area. I and SS has a workforce of approximately 2,000 people at nine locations nationwide and will be comprised of four program areas: Advanced Information Systems, Mission Systems, Security Solutions, which includes SBInet, and Advanced I and SS. "The new Intelligence and Security Systems division enables increased focus on the complex challenges faced by our homeland security and intelligence community customers," Krone said. "Under Steve's leadership, I and SS will improve our ability to bring comprehensive, net-enabled capabilities to meet our customers' dynamic requirements." Oswald most recently was vice president and program manager of Boeing's Space Shuttle program, a position he has held since joining Boeing in November 2001. A veteran of three space shuttle missions, he commanded mission STS-67 aboard the Space Shuttle Endeavour in March 1995, after piloting two missions aboard Discovery in 1992 and 1993. Oswald also served as the NASA associate administrator for Space Operations at NASA Headquarters, where his responsibilities included oversight of the Space Shuttle, Expendable Launch Vehicle and Space Communications programs. Oswald's military service spanned 34 years until his retirement from the Navy Reserve as a rear admiral in October 2007. His most recent assignments include service as the deputy commander of the Joint Task Force-Global Network Operations in 2000-01 and then as the Reserve assistant deputy chief of naval operations for Communications and Networks through 2007. Oswald holds a Bachelor of Science in aerospace engineering from the U.S. Naval Academy and is a graduate of the U.S. Naval Test Pilot School. Brewster Shaw, vice president and general manager of Boeing's Space Exploration division and also a former astronaut, will serve as the interim Space Shuttle program manager and provide leadership to the program throughout the transition period to ensure continued focus on space shuttle mission assurance. US delays troop drawdown in Europe Washington (AFP) Dec 19, 2007 Defense Secretary Robert Gates agreed to delay a drawdown of US troop levels in Europe, the Pentagon said Wednesday, following requests from commanders to maintain its military personnel levels there at around 40,000. |
