Russia successfully launched Friday a military satellite from its Plesetsk cosmodrome, Russian news agencies reported.

The Meridian communications satellite was put into orbit by a Soyuz-2 rocket, the RIA Novosti news agency cited as saying the spokesman for the Russian military space forces, Alexei Zolotukhin.

The satellite, which was launched at 0153 Moscow time (2153 GMT Thursday), was placed in orbit at 0527 Moscow time (0127 GMT), Zolotukhin said, adding that so far it was functioning normally.
